President’s
Message
September/October 2011
Once again I would like to thank the members of the Murray Lions Club
for selecting me to fill the position of President. This year it is my hope that we will not only inspire volunteerism
amongst ourselves but also in our community. We will be following International President, Wing-Kun Tam’s, initiative
of “The Year of One Million” trees by planting trees in Murray and Calloway County. Linda Avery is heading up this
project so please join us in selecting sites and giving us ideas about how we can move forward.

Murray Lions Club Foundation:
The Foundation was established in October of 2010. The Murray Business Branch and the parent Murray Lions Club have recently determined initial signature events they will sponsor via the Foundation.
The Murray Business Branch has decided to raise $10,000 to purchase a new digital camera for the KidSight program. The new camera is needed because older cameras were becoming less reliable and sometimes inoperable.
In addition they used Polaroid film which has become difficult to purchase because Polaroid film is no longer being produced. The KidSight program screens vision of 0 to 5 year old children. Murray Lions have been screening
children in day care and pre-school settings.
The parent Murray Lions Club has decided to highlight education and awareness programs for children with Juvenile Diabetes. Lions clubs have demonstrated a long involvement in diabetes because it is the leading cause
to a leading cause of blindness. As its inaugural event Lions are partnering with the Murray-Calloway Endowment for Healthcare along with other partners — UK, Pella and Farmer’s Market — to sponsor Diabetes Awareness Day on
Saturday, September 17th at Murray Calloway Fairgrounds.

The USA/Canada Lions Leadership Forum is known around the world of Lionism as the only Forum that is dedicated to the everyday Lion –
dedicated to educating the attendees and improving their leadership skills. You cannot help but leave a Forum with some new ideas and
many new friends. Next years Forum will be in Tampa Bay, Florida on September 13-15, 2012. I encourage everyone to consider attending
a USA/Canada Leadership Forum.
